I often have a number of paintings on the go in my studio, and work on them as and when I’m inspired.  The following is a project I just started.

It is a still life of plums and seashells in the style I most enjoy painting in.   Before I begin my still lifes, I almost always paint my canvas or gesso panel cadmium red (someone once told be that Velazquez painted this way, though I have never been able to confirm this)!  For me, I feel that an under paint gives my finished paintings a certain glow.  I then sketch the image onto the canvas in willow stick.  Next, I paint over my sketch/drawing in raw umber.  Finally, I apply many layers of paint.
